I think you hit the nail on the head when you talk about options. So I wanted to raise the topic of discussion. I know this has been a major topic of discussion, but I haven't heard a lot of people discussing the issue of all of these factors stacking on top of eachother as opposed to just criticizing individual strong moves. It's a common consensus so far that he struggles with rushdown, but rushdown characters in particular have to be careful with his options because a careless approach can take a very early stock. Where I feel the problem with Hero lies is that he has a truly insane amount of hard-punish options available to him at a time and he forces his opponent to be constantly considering all of them. While I'm not necessarily happy with some details of some of his moves, overall no move he has makes him "broken" (Gimr's ledgetrump combo aside) nor would any one of his moves make him particularly divisive. Any small misplay risked low-percent kills if I was unlucky.Īll of this is to say, my issue with Hero doesn't come down to any one "broken" move he has. And at any moment I needed to be ready to flit my eyes to a small menu at the bottom of the screen, read four options, and react to any of them faster than my opponent can read one and use it. I couldn't risk getting hit by Smash attacks ever lest I get randomly crit for an early kill. I needed to not approach carelessly and eat a Kazap, not commit too hard to any option horizontally and eat a fireball, watch my recovery to make sure I couldn't be gimped by Kaswoosh while also preparing for whatever Command Selection option he could draw. The reason I was feeling so much stress facing this character was that I didn't need to just not walk into Falcon Punch. Hero is different because Hero can kill you from 40% about a half a dozen different ways. Doriyah, Falcon Punch, charged projectiles, etc have existed for ages and no one complained so why is Hero different? Like most low-percent kill moves in the game many of them are difficult to land and/or punishable. As a lot of people have pointed out, most of these moves don't do anything that other characters can't do. I got to be on the receiving end of Magic Bursts, Kazaps, instant shield breaks from Oomph+Psych Up, Kamakazees, Thwacks, the whole nine yards. And after thinking about it for a moment, the reason why was obvious: this guy could kill me early above half a dozen different ways. I very much noticed the big trend of playing against Hero was that I spent the entirety of those matches feeling stressed and out of control, even when I had a substantial lead. Rather than focus on "this move is busted!" or "these buffs net a super early kill!" or "crits!" I think understanding the response to this character requires us to consider everything comprehensively. After a few days of fighting this guy quite a fair bit (online unfortunately as I was at my locals earlier on Tuesday) I want to share my opinion of why I believe the character is divisive and why I think many consider him too strong. I find the response to Hero on here super interesting in that people seem genuinely torn on whether or not this character is broken.
